NUMOSA, IP Star BV and partners cooperate in order to establish the technological & economical feasibility of using advanced space technology from the MELiSSA program for urine, grey and black water treatment, within a Sanitation-unit.

Through the Sanitation-unit project, NUMOSA and IPStar expect to accelerate the development and commercialization of urine, grey and blackwater treatment everywhere people are . These would provide cost-efficient solutions with minimal environmental impacts to clear human urine and feaces and make them to (drinking)water and nutrients. All over the world there are many places where people live in a not hygienic environment. While one person in three does not have access to basic sanitation facilities, the question of sanitation is “a public health issue that is not properly addressed” (Emmanuelle Bastide). Yet sanitation is critical for preventing undernutrition “a deadly disease which causes 45% of deaths in children under 5” (Jean Lapègue). The sanitation-unit can bring a solution. A unit with toilet en washing facilities with technics to treat the yellow, grey and blackwater to clean water and nutrients.
